One of my all-time favorite books, ever, is Kon-Tiki, Thor Heyerdahl's account of his 1947 attempt to float five thousand miles across the Pacific from Peru to Polynesia. Bucking universal scorn and probable doom, he and five friends built their raft by hand using only materials available to early South Americans. A documentary
of their magnificent adventures already won an Oscar in 1951 [clip after the jump]. This week Toronto screens a new feature begging the timeless question, What would you do stuck on a raft for four months with six blond lean-muscled Norwegian men?
