Today's Only Oscar Story Is Megan Ellison

Not Harvey Weinstein. Not Scott Rudin. The producer with two Oscar nominations for best picture today is Megan Ellison, for frontrunner American Hustle and underdog Her. Last year Megan was nominated for Zero Dark Thirty and also produced The Master. If you count her executive producer credits (True Grit, The Grandmaster), her films have been nominated for 32 Oscars. She's a lesbian. And she's 27 years old.

The hetero male story of the day is David O. Russell having players nominated in all four acting categories for two consecutive years. He and Alexander Payne both are both nominated for best director for their third consecutive films (American Hustle, Silver Linings Playbook, The Fighter / Nebraska, The Descendants, Sideways).

Six(!) big noms for Dallas Buyers Club, the aids movie no one in Hollywood would make, including best picture, best screenplay, and as I promised the first-ever nods for Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto.

Best noms: Dirty Wars [watch now], Sally Hawkins, Bob Nelson (his first screenplay!), June Squibb, Steven Price, Ernest & Celestine.

Worst snubs: Nicole Holofcener, Blackfish [watch now], Emma Thompson, Robert Redford, All Is Lost, anything for The Way Way Back or The Place Beyond the Pines, something pretty or designy for Renoir.

Omissions I'm Okay With: Blue Is the Warmest Color, Tom Hanks, The Butler, Paul Greengrass, Pixar.
