Co-writing with Andrew Durham, co-producing with her brother Roman, Sofia Coppola will film Fairyland: A Memoir of My Father [Kindle], Alysia Abbott's book about being raised by her divorced gay dad in San Francisco in the 70s and 80s and his death from aids. It was among the most-cited on Thebes annual poll. Sofia told Deadline, “I love the book Fairyland; it’s a sweet and unique love story of a girl and her dad, both growing up together in 1970′s San Francisco. I think it will make an engaging and touching movie on a subject I’ve never seen before.”
I like Sofia's work. My compulsive tic demands I point out, again, this will be yet another Hollywood movie in which the gay man dies at the end and the straight characters live on, sadder but noble in their compassion.
