The several dozen same-sex couples who have wed in the Australian Capital Territory since Saturday, today saw their unions dissolved by a unanimous high court ruling that rejects marriage equality. The silver lining comes via George Williams, a constitutional law expert who:
"said it was significant that the high court made clear the federal parliament had the power to legislation for same-sex marriage nationally. He had not expected this to be spelled out in the ruling.
"That’s a very significant finding and it’s significant because when the federal bills have come into the parliament the ‘no’ people have argued strongly it would be unconstitutional … This clears the way for a federal law."
