As promised, the Liberace biopic that Hollywood wouldn't release, Behind the Candelabra [now on dvd], has swept the Emmy awards, winning eleven of its fifteen nominations including best movie, best director, best actor, best art direction, best costumes, best makeup, best hair, and many more.
I thought it was a surprisingly great movie about gay relationships and the imbalances in an older-younger power couple, but I sympathize with viewers upset that a closeted celebrity who did little to nothing to help gay rights and lied about aids is being lionized. That Elton John number was terrible and seemed like any old tune he had sitting around that he suddenly decided to call a tribute song. A song actually inspired by Liberace ought to have some flash: you should hear the capes and the rings and the poodles... and the lost chances and emptiness.
