Two Brits, two Americans, a Canadian, and a Swiss writer comprise this year's finalists for the world's richest prize for a story collection, the Frank O'Connor Short Story Award. Previous winners include Yiyun Li for her remarkable, gay-inclusive Gold Boy, Emerald Girl, Edna O'Brien, Haruki Murakami, Nathan Englander, and Jhumpa Lahiri. The shortlist:

Cut from the longlist of 78: Emma Donoghue's queer-filled Astray, Junot Diaz, Jennifer Haigh, Ron Rash, George Saunders, Joan Silber, and Jess Walter, among others. The winner will be announced in early July at the Cork short story festival.
