Way too much of a good thing, the ForeWord Book of the Year Awards today announced finalists in 62 categories, honoring work from academic or independent presses including the self-published. Proving their excesses, Richard Kramer's smart, funny family novel These Things Happen [Kindle] is one of 17 finalists in General Fiction, though it might as easily have been one of the 15 finalists in Literary Fiction, or one of the 12 finalists in Gay & Lesbian Fiction. Highlights of the genre-dominated lgbt fiction list are Hilary Sloin's queer riff on the nature of biography, Art on Fire; Jesse Blackadder's Mary Queen of Scots novel The Raven's Heart; former Ladder contributor Lee Lynch's pre-Stonewall The Raid; and John J. Kelley's post-WWI recovery story The Fallen Snow.
The 62 winners -- in fifteen fiction categories, forty-one nonfiction categories, and six children's categories -- will be announced at ALA Chicago on June 28.
