The Perry Mason show was a big deal in my house when I was growing up. Unfortunately, I'll never forget the theme song. The entire family watched every show, with popcorn. The bad guy never won. Perry's partner made me feel funny in an odd good way that I'd come to understand better later, and I loved Della's fashion sense. I somehow knew not to mention either. Perry was an authority figure, and so was worshipped by the parents. I remember thinking when Raymond came out that my dad would have taken it badly and mom would have looked shellshocked and refused to talk about it. I was an out jaded gay old fart living in California who knew plenty of closeted actors when Raymond came out but even I (or the kid in me) paused for a blink in non-comprehending confusion. Perry Mason is gay? Heh, minds are funny.
