Strong Women Weekend ended on a high note last night as the Met premiered a new production of Thaïs. With its typical story arc of monk meets harlot, harlot scoffs then converts, monk reconsiders and wants to get carnal, harlot says no and dies, the opera has long been considered (merely) a star vehicle for its soprano. Renée Fleming soared, as did the other star of the evening, her costumes (and hers only) specially designed by Christian Lacroix. Which is not to overlook the awesome Thomas Hampson who earned a thundering ovation.
Speaking of strong women, during the first intermission I passed Sigourney Weaver and silently urged her to revive Sgt. Ripley. During the second intermission I left to get a Vitamin Water at the same time Anna Wintour and companion were heading for Bar Boulud. If I were more self-promoting [New Year's resolution?], I would mention she eyed me three times, apparently not in horror. When I returned, I saw Christine Baranski. At the end, walking home, I passed a car that suggested Caroline Kennedy was there.
I know: Every weekend is Strong Women Weekend.
