Between your Scott Heim entry and the banner image of the butterfly on the echinacea...I am beside myself with giddy delight. O, Stephen, you ARE the promised kiss of springtime that makes the lonely winter seem long.

Having purchased We Disappear at this reading, I am now engrossed in it. Halfway through, the darkness is not yet debilitating and it looks as if Scott's coming home to his mother will have profound effects on them both. I am hopeful (don't tell me the ending - LaLaLaLaLaLaLaLaLa).

As a soon-to-be-former staffer at the Chelsea Barnes & Noble, I am sad that the New York real estate market would render such a store economically unsustainable. The 500% increase is a fact (the landlord even inserted that into an "article" in the NY Post). Bookstores with their low profit margins, even B&N, cannot compete with big box merchandisers. This store always performed well, both new titles and backlist, but when landlords smell big profits they don't care what a store like this means to a community. This was the Gay B&N, and it singlehandedly touched off the re-establishment of that stretch of 6th Ave. as a destination shopping district (enabling said landlord to make his outrageous demands). Sic Transit Gloria.
