Spender was a moral coward, and not much of poet, either, in my book.

Jamesianster

Spender found his true vocation in being a literary impresario and all round chronicler, with Isherwood, of his time. Both of them were overshadowed by Auden, in life and death, as Wystan’s was the greater talent. As a trio they exerted considerable influence and gave a cachet to the homintern. I find the gossip Spender Isherwood dispense in their journals of greater interest now than their works.
