Congratulations, nominees... now stay home! Seeking to improve an annual ceremony that they "are told consistently...is too long," the Lammys announced they will cut five categories from the live gala event and, instead, "winners of these categories will receive by mail a Lambda Literary Award." Downgraded to "a presentation slide" during queer books' biggest night are: Gay Erotica, Lesbian Erotica, LGBT Anthology, LGBT Studies, and LGBT Drama.
Facebook feedback calls the change "disheartening," "an insult," that "makes no sense." Readers "couldn't see the merit" and suggested the LLF "need to revamp the entire program and criteria." Commenters likened the two-tiered system to the Daytime Emmys and the kiddie table. Positive comments have not yet been posted in this thread or on Lambda's FB page.
In support of the new outcasts, read one of the 2012 winners:
LGBT Anthology: Gay Latino Studies: A Critical Reader edited by Michael Hames-García and Ernesto Javier Martínez
Gay Erotica: All Together [Kindle] by Dirk Vanden
Lesbian Erotica: Story of L [Kindle]
by Debra Hyde
LGBT Studies: Sister Arts: The Erotics of Lesbian Landscapes by Lisa L. Moore
LGBT Drama: A Menopausal Gentleman
by Peggy Shaw
They need a more organised organiser for the event I feel. someone who times all the speeches with a watch of iron, like the big awards. Cutting five awards because they can't get people to keep their shit to 2 minutes max (for example) is, as someone else has said, "an insult" - it's not like they have 200 awards and they need to cut down because like the Oscars the technical side has to have their own awards. Just be organised!
