In only its second year in the UK, twenty thousand volunteers will distribute one million free copies of these twenty-five books, including works by Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, Emma Donoghue, Kazuo Ishiguro, Andrea Levy, Cormac McCarthy, and Roald Dahl.
Making its US debut today, World Book Night USA will see twenty-five thousand volunteers in more than five thousand communities distributing half a million free copies of these thirty books, including Patti Smith's memoir Just Kids [Kindle] of her early days with gay photographer Robert Mapplethorpe. Also, fiction by Sherman Alexie, Chris Cleave, Suzanne Collins, Michael Connelly, Junot Diaz, Dave Eggers, Sue Grafton, John Irving, Barbara Kingsolver, Nicole Krauss, Jhumpa Lahiri, Tim O'Brien, Ann Patchett, Jodi Picoult, Marilynne Robinson, and Alice Sebold.
The only author to appear on both lists is Stephen King.
The UK site lists locations where citizens can participate. Very unfortunately, the US site doesn't.
The USA director had announced the project aiming for 50,000 volunteers distributing one million free books but they ran out of money. They refuse to take funding from Amazon. They are supported by publishers, printers, and brick & mortar booksellers.
