Regent/Here Media, the company that killed Alyson Books in print and reduced the Advocate to a ten-times-a-year add-on, has a new plan to continue publishing OUT magazine after today firing the entire editorial staff. Yep, OUTsourcing. Editor Aaron Hicklin is creating a custom-content company called Grand Editorial whose first client is OUT. He will extend offers to "most" of the twelve staffers as contract freelancers with no benefits to write the magazine on a per project basis. He said, "This was not a cost-cutting measure." He's looking for office space in Carroll Gardens.
Capital New York notes: "Here Media has had problems paying its freelancers and vendors over the past several years. There is an outstanding fraud lawsuit, meanwhile, against Regent."
