Congratulations to out lesbian writer/director Dee Rees whose debut, coming out film Pariah today earned an amazing seven NAACP 43rd Image Awards nominations including Best Picture and Best Independent Film. To compare, studio heavyweights The Help
had eight nominations and Jumping the Broom earned six. Rees herself was nominated twice, joining her lead actress, supporting actress, and supporting actor. Rees, 34, grew up in Nashville and told the LAT she came out at 27, so don't assume her movie is entirely autobiographical.
The Image Awards also honor excellence in Television, Music, and Literature. Eight categories for books include forty titles, most exciting of which is lesbian, National Book Award-winner Nikky Finney's Head Off & Split and the Thebes' poll favorite We the Animals [Kindle] by Justin Torres.
