Jennifer Egan has won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction for her novel A Visit from the Goon Squad [[Kindle]] and former Poet Laureate Kay Ryan has won the award in poetry for her greatest hits collection spanning 45 years inclusive of her lesbian relationships, The Best of It: New and Selected Poems.
The general nonfiction award was given to Siddhartha Mukherjee for The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer, and Ron Chernow won the award in biography for Washington: A Life. Eric Foner won the award in history for The Fiery Trial: Abraham Lincoln and American Slavery.
Bruce Norris won the drama prize for Clybourne Park.
Many years the most interesting aspect of the Pulitzers announcement is the runners-up. Not this time. The other fiction finalists are Jonathan Dee's The Privileges and Chang-rae Lee's The Surrendered. The fiction jury was critic Elizabeth Taylor, Alan Cheuse, and Nicholas Delbanco.
