Earlier tonight more than 9,000 lgbt athletes from 70+ nations celebrated the opening of Gay Games VIII in Cologne. Notable:
A speech by Germany's openly gay Vice Chancellor and Minister of Hot, Guido Westerwelle, who spoke movingly about lgbt rights ("No religion can ever justify murder") but was booed by some in the stadium when introduced (unpopular government or jealous of his bf?).
The return of Taylor Dayne, 48, who largely rawked the house with her hit Tell It To My Heart and the official Gay Games VIII song, Facing a Miracle. Strong voiced, she was overcome with emotion to be headlining a very happening stadium gala when otherwise battling that Joan Rivers' blank engagement book syndrome.
Adorable Matthew Mitcham dancing his heart out in the stadium aisle next to us. Divers know how to move their body.
All the people who seemed a little amazed to meet Team Alaska -- and, god bless them, never mentioned _ A _ A _ _ A _ I _ to us -- most especially Team Berlin, Team St Louis, Team New Mexico, Team Seattle, and the greatest lgbt sports journalist Cyd from Outsports who has posted four pages of team photos.
Go team Alaska!
